MUSIC AS A LANGUAGE OF DIPLOMACY

Communication is paramount to effective diplomacy for Human Rights. Often, dialogue is hindered by misconceptions, politicized rhetoric, and incognizant people - overlooking the human element of Human Rights. Central to any positive social change is the ability to empower people with dignity and humanity. Art is an effective language of diplomacy because of its ability foster a cooperation and conversation between countries in a neutral setting, create empathy and sympathy from international communities, and re-center the narrative on the human lives involved.

Classical violinist Hyung Joon Won embodies “art as a language of diplomacy” with his project One Harmony, a first ever combined classical orchestra of Koreans from both the North and the South peninsula. The North and South Korean issue is complex, nuanced, and often misunderstood.  Using the love of classical music by both the North and South, Won aims to engage in constructive dialogue and collaboration as a step towards positive change.


By building a robust and complete conversation around North and South Korea, inspiring connection through art, and humanizing the struggle of North Korea, One Harmony brings greater awareness and empowers action.

Join Hyung Joon Won in a powerful evening of classical music. Afterwards, Won will speak about his world recognized project One Orchestra, an Inter-Korean Orchestra for collaboration and conversation between North and South Korea. 

Afterwards, following a reception of food and drinks, The Human Rights Network's initiative, Project Art and Dialogue, will host a panel discussion with Hyung Joon Won and a panel of esteemed artists, NGO Leaders, and Activists as we discover the need for art in social good.

MEET THE JOINING PANELISTS 

JIEUN BAEK | Oxford, UK 

Jieun Baek is a Ph.D. candidate in Public Policy at the University of Oxford.  Previously, she was a research fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University where she wrote North Korea’s Hidden Revolution: How the Information Underground is Transforming a Closed Society. Her new book will be published by Yale University Press in November, 2016. Baek worked at Google, where, among other roles, she served as Google Ideas’ North Korea expert. Baek received her bachelor’s in Government and master’s degrees in PublicPolicy from Harvard. ELIAS POPA | New York City 

Elias Popa is the founder and owner of The Human Rights Network in New York City. After years documenting refugees due to religious persecution in Southeast Asia, he founded the organization in dedication to discovering creative and unique platforms for diplomacy and human rights discussion. As an artist and curator, his work revolves around "Art as a Language for Diplomacy". He works and lives in New York City and often is curating art exhibitions as well producing art. BOB BIERMAN | New York City 

Bob Bierman serves as Chief Revenue Officer of News Deeply, Inc. News Deeply convenes stakeholders in global issues via single-subject digital news sites, events, research and membership groups. Prior to this he served as General Manager of Washington Post Live, the live journalism division of the Washington Post, which integrates live editorial conferences with print and digital editorial products.  He also founded the Bloomberg Link division of Bloomberg L.P., held executive positions at Fortune Magazine and was Vice President/General Manager of the trade show giant, Softbank Comdex. His work has won numerous awards ranging from "Best Overall Conference" in China and Folio Magazine FAME awards. Having done business in 25 countries, with a specialization in China, India, Southeast Asia and Mexico, Bob's career spans the globe. Given his belief that arts articulate a culture in the most complete way possible, before entering any market, he spends an intensive period of time studying the art, music and culture of the country in which he will operate. JUN CHO | Pianist New York City 

Pianist Jun Cho has appeared as both solo and chamber musician at major New York Venues, including Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Mr. Cho has also performed as Concerto Soloist with orchestras of Rice University, The Juilliard School, and The Mannes School. An avid collaborator, Mr. Cho has performed with renowned musicians including Kathleen Winkler, Tobey Appel, and Yutta Puchhammer. He has given extensive collaborative performances at the Aspen Music Festival and the Sejong Music Festival. He was recently appointed to the Collaborative Piano Faculty of the Heifetz Institute. Jun Cho received both Bachelors and Masters from The Juilliard School as a student of Julian Martin and Choong-Mo Kang. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate Degree at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston  in the studio of Professor Jon Kimura Parker. 

 

 

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST & ONE ORCHESTRA

Hyung Joon Won is a South Korean violinist widely recognized for his musicianship and national activism. A child prodigy, Mr. Won gave his first solo performance with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of ten. Before enrolling at Juilliard, he won grand prizes at competitions such as Juilliard Pre-College, the Kingsville International and New York Philharmonic. Mr. Won has worked with a number of world-renown orchestras as a soloist, including the Hong Kong Pan Asia Philharmonic, Massapequa Philharmonic, and the Marrowstone Festival Orchestra. In 1990, Mr. Won proudly represented South Korea when he performed at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Switzerland. The forum, which celebrated the 1990 reunification of East and West Germany, inspired Mr. Won to think of music as a medium of reconciliation. In 1996, he performed at the UN General Assembly Hall under the theme World Peace. Such performances strengthened his resolve to leverage his musical career for the reunification of North and South Korea.

In 2009, with the hope of creating a joint North and South Korea orchestra, Hyung Joon Won founded both the Lindenbaum Music Company and Lindenbaum Festival Orchestra. From 2009 to now 2016, through the Lindenbaum Music Company, Mr. Won has continuously launched apolitical campaigns that pushes for the inter-Korean orchestra project called “One Orchestra.” The Lindenbaum Festival Orchestra was realized with the preeminent Maestro Charles Dutoit, who is the current Principal Conductor of Royal Philharonic Orchestra. Gaining international recognition for his ambitious project, Mr. Won was invited to speak at Oxford Union in England (Feb 2013) and at Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission in the inter-Korean border, Panmumjom, also known as Joint Security Area (Oct 2013). On August 15th 2015, the 70th anniversary of Korean Liberation, Mr. Won planned to hold a joint orchestra concert between the Koreas. Even though the execution of the concert was aborted due to high political tensions, Mr. Won believes that eventually, his dreams will come true. Mr. Won’s relentless efforts towards making his dream a reality is captured in the documentary film named “9 at 38,” soon to be released.
